Battle of the Bands 1966 Hollywood Bowl
recording
1966
"Iced Tea", A Jazz Waltz featuring a liberal dose of whole tones and named after our favorite beverage, was written to showcase the trio in the 1966 "Battle of the Bands". This event was sponsored by the County of Los Angeles Department of Parks and Recreation and was held annually at the Hollywood Bowl. Although Wes Jacobs played upright bass quite well, his primary instrument was-and is-the tube. Knowing this, I included a cadenza in the arrangement which had him culminating on a double high C. The trio won its division and the sweepstakes award for the highest point total of the competition. In the audience was Neely Plumb, West Coast Manager of Popular A&R Productions was RCA Records. He was impressed with the group in general and use of tuba in particular. Neely felt that with the right songs, "rock-tuba" could have some commercial potential. Consequently we were signed to RCA in September of 1966. Eleven sides were cut in minimal time, with the two most commercial to be played for the "powers that be" at RCA. "Iced Tea" was obviously not one of them but even the most accessible two selections failed to impress and we were subsequently out of the studio - and out contract. This recording is a transfer of yet another tired acetate reference disc.
