As a teacher and performer, I believe in two things: First, all music is good music. I grew up studying classical violin as well as learning fiddle tunes and jazz tunes. Throughout my studies, I regularly had teachers who spoke poorly of traditional music and rolled their eyes when I played them. I work hard with my students to encourage them to be well versed musicians – without sacrificing technique. I believe it is essential for a modern musician to be able to play various styles to meet the demands of today’s music industry. My second belief is that music should be enjoyable. I know from my own experience that students learn better and faster when they enjoy and are passionate about what they are learning – be that a classical concerto, Brazilian choro tune, or a top 40 radio hit.
James teaches violin styles - classical, bluegrass/old time fiddle, Irish fiddle, jazz/swing, tango - to all ages with intermediate to advanced abilities. James also teaches music theory, improvisation, beginning piano, and is available for ensemble coaching in all styles.
