In 16 by Sondheim Siri Vik Vicki Brabham and company explore composer-lyricist Stephen Sondheim’s life, his creative process and the personal impact of his music, through 16 individual songs that span his almost 50-year career.
"I, of course," writes Siri, "am one among hordes of singers, actors, theater people, and people of a certain age who adore Sondheim’s music and who pay tribute to his work since his 2022 passing. I'm curious about the feeling we have for Sondheim. It's not just reverence for his genius, or his large role in modern American musical theater, which was huge. I think it’s more about growing up on Sondheim’s songs. It’s more than high regard, because the feeling for a Sondheim song is personal. Sondheim’s music calls you to the art of it. The art of making theater, story, music. It calls you to be a part of the work behind the scenes, or, even, the life behind the scenes--- if that makes any sense at all. Maybe it's inspiration.
Sondheim’s songs taught me important things about art and being an artist, and taught me about paradox, about living in the world. I remember all these moments, when a Sondheim song expanded my view, changed my mind, gave me a laugh, pulled me up short, allowed me compassion, understanding. That’s the stuff that makes up these 16 songs – it is an honor and joy to share it with you."
