On February 26, 1917, at the Victor Talking Machine Company in New York, the Chicago-based Original Dixieland ‘Jass’ Band recorded 2 sides of the New Orleans dance music style with which it had been taking New York by storm. The band’s claim that they were the “Creators of Jazz” was obviously marketing huff, but “Livery Stable Blues” and “Dixie Jass Band One Step” were indeed the first salvos in the powerful onslaught of recorded jazz. Jesse Cloninger and the Emerald City Jazz Kings begin the 2013-14 season with a tribute to those early years of jazz on record, with a special focus on the recordings of King Oliver, Frankie Trumbauer, Sidney Bechet, Bix Beiderbecke and Louis Armstrong along with plenty of period songs. Be prepared for two hours of classic 1920s hot jazz and sassy vocals including such gems as “St. Louis Blues”, “Chinatown, My Chinatown”, “Dipper Mouth Blues”, “King Porter Stomp”, “China Boy”, “Limehouse Blues”, an “Tiger Rag”.
